In her 1951 book The Air Force Wife, Nancy Shea
wrote, “The Officers’ Wives’ Club and the NCO Wives’ Club on an air base
serve as the hub of the Air Force wives’ social life. … It is every wife’s
duty not only to join but to take an active interest in the Woman’s Club on
the base where her husband is stationed … there is no regulation or law
compelling an Air Force wife to join the Woman’s Club, but she is
expected to do so!” Those days are over!
So why should
I join the MGOSC? I have a life of my
own!
Today’s Officers’
Spouses’ Clubs are not simply vehicles for women to sit around drinking tea
and discussing their husbands’ careers!
MGOSC
members come from all walks of life and include everyone from full-time
professionals to stay-at-home moms and homeschoolers. All
use their unique talents and abilities to make the MGOSC a fun, dynamic, and
fulfilling organization. But what does the MGOSC have to offer me?
Who else but another
military spouse will understand your feelings when you find out your husband
will be deployed on your tenth anniversary?
Who
else will know what it is like to have the car break down, the toilet
overflow, and the baby catch the chicken pox the first week he is gone, and
who else will know how to help you get through each crisis, keeping your
sense of humor intact?
Our
members range from retirees to newbies and among us have hundreds of years
of experience coping with remote tours, short-notice PCS’s, cross-country
moves with pets and kids, and cooking Thanksgiving dinner in a two-room TLF
on borrowed cookware - in short, with all the joys of military life! What kinds of activities does the MGOSC host?
We host monthly luncheons or dinners between August
and May to present informative and entertaining programs to the membership
at large. Past socials have included a performance by the Alabama Dance
Theater, lunch with Alabama’s First Lady Patsy Riley, a container gardening
demonstration, and of course, our yearly Bingo extravaganza!
Visit
our Programs page to learn about the wonderful
events our Programs Chair has planned for us this year!
In addition to our monthly socials, the MGOSC hosts
various special activities, which include, but are not limited to groups for
quilters, scrapbookers, and crafters, book clubs and cooking clubs, golf and
bowling leagues, and bunko and mah jongg groups.
